The Global Logistics (GL) Chief Operating Officer is responsible for maintaining and driving operational results within an intensely operational organization.  The COO will work closely with the CEO and the CFO, as well as the other executive management team members, to ensure the overall business operations and strategy are met and exceeded.

 

As a critical member of the organization, the COO must be a skilled executor, able to effectively communicate the operational vision and effectively lead its implementation to completion. In addition to being the top “executor,” the GL Chief Operating Officer plays several key roles to include Partner to the other executive team members and Mentor to the future leaders of the organization. The COO is an excellent leader and driven business person who can spur company growth, maintain key operational procedures, create new processes and ensure day to day operational excellence. In this role, the COO ensures productivity and effectiveness are regularly measured, analyzed, and acted upon, and the results are clearly communicated to all constituencies.

 

Operating as a self-starter with experience in Transportation, 3rd Party Logistics (3PL), and Fleet Operations environments means that the COO will also be a “key connector” ensuring effective collaboration between all functions, including but not limited to Pre-Sort, Network Operations, GL Fleet, Business Analytics, Supply Chain and Logistics to obtain optimal results and consistently exceed expectations.

 

The Chief Operations Officer is responsible for modeling company values and promoting the company culture. This is a remote role and will oversee all Company operations, support staff and will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

 

Key Result Areas

 

    • Drive the organization’s results from an operational perspective, working closely with the CFO, CEO, and the other key executive team members.
    • Establish, in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team, multi-year global logistics growth strategies; aligned with company-wide strategic and capital allocation priorities and initiatives.
    • Guide execution against these plans, adjusting as market conditions change and evolve. Assist business units in developing and implementing a strategy for achieving division-managed logistics targets.
    • Clearly communicate strategy, tactical priorities, and performance expectations across the Global Logistics organization and work collaboratively with leadership to ensure strategies are productively aligned
    • Establish reliable forecasts and aggressive but attainable goals for unit economics ensuring these goals are linked to growth in the overall economic value of the business
    • Develop robust enterprise-wide metrics to measure the effectiveness of the overall organizational operations ultimately achieving word class results to include, but not limited to on time delivery, shipping cycle time efficiency, schedule adherence (getting the trains running on time), cost, productivity, quality, real time performance transparency and especially customer satisfaction.
    • Identify risk reduction measures through effective risk mitigation programs that focus on appropriate second source strategies, increasing capacities of vendors
    • Manage external partners strategically with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement, as well as operationally ensuring the partners’ adherence to contractual obligations, regulatory governance through SLAs, operational escalation procedures, and day-to-day operational engagement
    • Ensure accurate and timely reports outlining the operational condition of the company are in place and effectively managed to promote continuous improvement.
    • Work closely with the senior management team to create, implement and roll out plans for operational processes, internal infrastructures, reporting systems, and company policies all designed to foster growth, profitably, and efficiencies within the company. 
    • Motivate and encourage employees at all levels as one of the key leaders in the company including but not limited to professional staff, management level employees, and executive leadership team members. 
    • Foster a growth oriented, positive and encouraging environment while keeping employees and management accountable to company policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Data-driven / metrics-driven: Global Logistics is an intensely operational environment and the GL COO is charged with ensuring the team is laser focused on achieving overall results through flawless execution. He or she must be able to create a culture of accountability through data by setting the right metrics and tying organizational performance, compensation, and promotions to tangible results.
  • Wise Leader: The COO will understand and embrace the differences within his or her organization’s functions, and will excel at establishing processes to ensure the functions coordinate and execute across the full operational cycle ensuring the maximum growth possible and in support of the overall company goals
