Approach:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ implemented various solutions and capabilities to enhance the logistics company’s operations, streamline their processes, and improve efficiency. This included developing customized workflows,providing multiple order entry options, introducing containerization for easy pallet movement, integrating with carriers, and offering a ‘Request for Quote’ feature.

Three Different Order Type Workflows:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ developed three different order type workflows to provide full coverage of our customer’s

Custom Barcode Label:

The first workflow involved the capability of generating custom barcode labels. This allowed for accurate tracking
of packages and streamlined the shipping process.

Carrier Shipping Label:

The second program provided the ability to get carrier shipping label directly. The logistics brand does not hold
inventory for the first two programs, which helped reduce storage costs.

Fulfillment Program:

The third program was a fulfillment program for which the brand took ownership of their client inventory for
shipping. This allowed for seamless delivery of products to end customers.

Order Entry:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ provided three ways of order entry – API, CSV upload, and user interface. This ensured that clients could easily place orders using their preferred method.

X-Dock:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ introduced capabilities such as X-Dock to strengthen our customer’s transportation network
with an ability in the system to create custom regional and NSP boards. This helped improve transportation efficiency and reduce costs.

Package Sorting:

The system provided the ability to sort packages by carrier and their manifest location. This allowed for accurate

Containerization:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ introduced the process of containerization for easy pallet movement. This helped reduce labor hours and improved efficiency

Carrier Integration:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ integrated with several regional and national carriers with included features such as ASR since the accounts are licensed to ship alcohol and with several line hauls and lower-level transportation companies on an as-needed basis. This allowed for seamless integration with various carriers and helped reduce shipping costs.

Request for Quote:

Advatix Cloudsuite™ provided the ability to ‘Request for Quote’ for shipments to be delivered, with notifications
for the request broadcasted to all the carriers within a network. This helped improve transparency and allowed.

Outcome:

The pandemic ushered in a time of tremendous challenge and change for businesses and consumers. Organizations that were willing and able to adapt during these turbulent times had the option to pursue avenues that could still lead to continued success and growth. One Advatix client was able to secure an incredible new revenue opportunity but found itself in need of a helping hand during implantation to find a smooth and sustainable path forward.

This client was struggling with the new opportunity largely because they were dependent on legacy systems and processes that were not designed or well suited for the new workflow. From the onset, they were facing significant operational difficulties and were struggling to keep their service level agreements, maintain quality, and keep their customers satisfied. To ensure the best possible results for their business, they asked the experts at Advatix for assistance with an overall assessment of their operation that would lead to sustainable growth and smooth operations.

Background

The client has been in business for nearly a century, and operates beer, wine, and liquor retail locations. In recent years, they have been aggressively expanding their retail footprint and have grown to more than a dozen retail locations and associated warehouse space. In 2020, as the laws related to alcohol sales and delivery were relaxed in many locations across the country, the client looked for opportunities to adapt their business and seek out additional sources of revenue.

The Big Opportunity

During this same time, many startups were receiving significant funding to bring new ready-to-drink cocktail products to the market. Due to legal restrictions, these startups were not able to ship their products directly to their customers and were required to partner with distributors who could fulfill and deliver their orders.

As time progressed, many of these ready-to-drink cocktail producers found the distributors were moving away from products like theirs and focusing on traditional beer, wine, and liquor delivery. This resulted in the startup companies being stuck with significant inventory and without options to get their products to customers. The client tapped into a tremendous revenue stream by partnering with these startups to fulfill and deliver their orders.

Due to legal restrictions, these startups were not able to ship their products directly to their customers and were required to partner with distributors who could fulfill and deliver their orders.

Problem – Growing Pains!

During the initial consultation, Advatix discovered that the company was having significant growing pains while implementing their new workflows. To get the new revenue opportunity online quickly, the client was adapting their existing equipment and technology to perform tasks that they were not designed or well suited for. This quickly resulted in the introduction of unnecessary risk and operational inefficiencies.

For example, the client was using a stand-alone shipping software that was not integrated with their inventory management to produce paperwork and shipping labels for each order. When a new order came in, the paperwork was printed to begin the fulfillment process. The customer would immediately receive a tracking number and ship notification even though the order had not yet been shipped, and in some cases the products were not even in inventory.

Additionally, there was a lack of detail and visibility into the status of orders while they were being processed in each location. All of this culminated in late shipments, inaccurate inventory, and incorrect shipments. As a result, returns increased, customers were upset, and unnecessary costs were incurred.

The client also struggled to manage their data across siloed systems, with critical partner and customer information difficult to access. Reporting was limited, manual, and largely spreadsheet based. Orders were tendered manually, often days or weeks after the orders were completed. Overall, the process was disjointed, inaccurate, slow, and highly manual.

Solution

After the Advatix team conducted a complete operational health check and systems analysis, a thorough plan was developed to implement a full retail transformation. The first stages of the program which focused on empowering the customer’s retail locations to also serve as a network of fulfilment centers – were implemented in approximately 90 days and required little additional capital investment or changes to their existing retail infrastructure.

To support the transformation, the client implemented a fully customized end-to-end fulfillment execution platform (FEP) featuring the Advatix Cloudsuite. This solution brought new tools and technology to the organization and was able to integrate with the client’s legacy systems.

In-house workflows were modernized and became fully trackable at every touch point inside the organization. A dynamic communication webpage specific to each order is now created and made available to the customer; this provides real time WISMO (Where Is My Order?) visibility from order placement to final delivery.

The cost of turnover can be staggering! Significant time and resources are required to recruit, hire, onboard, train and ultimately bring new headcount up to full speed. According to Haid and Sims (2009), when an employee lacks an emotional connection to the team, the risk of separating from the company to pursue other opportunities is significantly increased. The Corporate Leadership Council reported engagement lowers employees’ likelihood of parting ways; engaged employees are almost 90% less likely to leave the company. They also found an average voluntary separation rate of just 13% in highly engaged team members, compared with the 29% of less engaged individuals in similar businesses. Large eCommerce players, as well as various start-ups, have identified last-mile services as a key differentiator. As we enter 2022, technology continues to enable us to connect the dots between businesses, consumers, products, and services. Logistics and fulfillment providers continue to look for ways to expand network footprints, shorten time between order and delivery, and increase their ability to quickly adjust to meet consumer demand. Now more than ever, eCommerce companies must keep up with rapidly evolving consumer expectations that are driven by constant technological disruption and innovation. Managing the end-to-end delivery experience is as critical for retailers as is the brand itself. With the rise of eCommerce, “new normal” has emerged for the delivery speeds that customers expect when they order online. One approach to overcoming these challenges is to leverage the assets of others by crowdsourcing last mile delivery. Crowdsourcing transportation became popular with ride hailing applications like Uber and Lyft. These companies access an estimated 2 million drivers and vehicles in North America alone. The ride booking companies create a nearly limitless network footprint while avoiding billions in capitol fleet investment and maintaining a low fixed payroll obligation.

Using similar technology to ride hailing, crowdsourcing last mile delivery offers access to a vast network of drivers and vehicles at a fraction of the capital investment. Customers increasingly expect to have orders delivered quickly and inexpensively to any location. For providers to meet these needs, the size and cost of network of facilities, vehicles, and staff can be astronomical. Market data shows the number of available crowdsource delivery drivers has increased tenfold since the beginning of the pandemic, indicating that an established fleet of drivers is available to support last mile delivery.

To optimize the effectiveness of crowdsourced delivery, eCommerce businesses and logistics providers need to use an app or platform that is relevant and engaging for drivers providing last mile delivery. This is critical to maximize the pool of available drivers who are actively monitoring their preferred platform. As more apps make their way into the market, the app must offer something beyond breadand-butter functionality. Drivers will likely only use a few platforms and will prioritize those that are user friendly and most lucrative for them. The platform or app used should create a fast and easy onboarding process, offer an efficient user experience for the drivers, and provide data to the drivers to demonstrate that business has the volume, customer base, and revenue opportunities to be worthy of their attention.

Engaging and retaining customers on the platform is similarly important. First and foremost, the app must be engaging and attract users. The interface must be feature rich and intuitive to use. The user needs to have constant successful interactions with the process; the first time a user struggles to find a driver to deliver their product can easily be the last time they use the platform. Having a world class algorithm to match user and driver is critical to customer retention. Modern users will also expect to be able to track deliveries in real time with street level accuracy.

2021 Peak: Are you ready? Let’s do a quick check-up.

Most companies that have a sales bonanza during peak are still reeling from the 2020 holiday peak season. There was a dramatic shift from bricks to bits and eCommerce sales grew by about 45% in 2020 (over 2019). While most companies have started to make shifts to support the eCommerce shift and plan for the gaps they had in 2020- the tsunami has a second wave that is about to hit us sooner this year with a 25% surge. The key question you need to ask yourself is: Are we ready?

Working on Talent Solution Strategies

The average cost of a bad hire is $14,900. For revenue generating positions and high-level roles, your cost for making a bad hire increases dramatically.

To make the “bad hire” matters worse, most businesses’ core competencies don’t include recruiting and hiring. Unless the business was started as a talent acquisition endeavor, chances are the things your business was built to do – the products or services you provide – are being negatively impacted by a). your need for talent and b). your process for finding that talent.

While it’s obvious that every business must employ some method to find and retain talent, the approach you choose doesn’t have to be costly, inefficient and an unnecessary drain on precious, limited resources. The Impact of Vibration on Leadership

Let’s take a moment to think about, sense and feel how we impact others as leaders. We all think and move at a different pace, and anyone we interact with is directly impacted by these “vibrations.” Google’s informal definition of vibration is “the atmosphere of a place, or the associations of an object, as communicated to and felt by others.” It’s like we’re all playing a big game of Battling Tops; we spin around each other, trying to communicate and interact, all while impacting those around us, both positively and negatively through our own independent rates of vibration.

As a former Naval Aviator, I was once told that I “work at the speed of Fighter Pilot.” At first I thought, “That’s awesome… I think and work at the speed of sound.” But after a moment of introspection I considered how this could negatively impact my team. What if not everyone on the team “vibrated” at the same rate? The effect would be that the combined wavelength of the team would be disrupted, and the team would be out of synch. Think of it like trying to create a chord while playing the guitar. Six strings, all vibrating at different rates, all coming together to create a perfect tone, but if one or more of those strings was out of tune with the others, the chord would fail to deliver the proper harmonics.

As a leader, it’s your job is to first understand yourself and how you impact others. After you understand yourself, take a moment to observe and “listen” to each of your team members and be aware of these differences in vibration. Work with everyone on your team to ensure that you’re all “in tune.” It’s up to you to vary your “vibration” and create the right harmonics for your team.
